Cooper Reading
and

and
Reading BMW Dealer so on the expensive side but I've always been satisfied with work. Have tried a number of dealers over past 10 years but found Coopers the best in the area.

Also:

Our boot was not closing and we thought we needed a new lock. all it needed was a push in the right direction to reach the clip to lock. Would have bought a new lock. Highly reccommended.

Also:

I took my bmw 318i (3 years old) to have its air con and a squeeky window repaired. A month later both parts are faulty again. The garage is charging me the full price again! I am horrified that I have already spent 250 with them and they are expecting the same again!

Also:

Very unhappy this dealer handles my request. First, they tried to charge me for what is covered by the insurance, second - I can't get my money back they've charged me (1 month already). Their managers (service dpt.) never called back as promised. Wouldn't advise anyone to go there.

Also:

My 325 came back with oil cooler line finger tight and then my M5 went in for new steering column after some thief drilled the door and came back with the steering wheel securing nut loose!!

And:

Customer service? What customer service? It felt like it was really too much trouble for them to work on an older car(1995 530i).

Also:

Very courteous reception staff, alas, hopelessly let down by service department, who neither know much about older cars, or care how they treat customers with older cars. They are also not good value for money!

Also:

Had non-running car recovered to Coopers Reading when I broke down on the M4. They lived up to their local reputation - won't answer the phone and zero communication. After several days of non-returned calls and broken promises I ended up having to go to place in person to find out what was happening with my car, only to be told it was done and waiting for collection. Over £50 for replacing a fuse wasn't amusing but I should have been able to solve it myself.

They appear to be far too busy, under-staffed and squashed for space which is more defensible than just bad customer service, but the result is the same - I won't use them again because it's too much like hard work.

Also:

Customer handling leads LOADS to be desired. 3 visits, over 5 hours in total spent collecting car waiting for them. Attmpted to overcharge (10l of oil in a car that uses 5!)

Not good. Didn't fix the problem either!

Also:

Awful!!!! Three visits and £800 later they still dont know whats wrong with my BMW 318Ti R reg, and offer no answer other than there are three more things that could be wrong with my engine costing about £1000, to get it all done. A COMPLETE JOKE!!!

Also:

Have ordered parts for my 2001 3-coupe several times, but parts never arrive and when eventually get through to parts department they have no record of parts being ordered! - good at selling cars - Useless at customer service!!

Also:

After using Cooper Reading for fiveyears I finally gave up in absolute exasperation! My car (528i Sport) was serviced by them from new because they were local, and it was on lease, so cost was no issue to me! I purchased the car at the end of three year lease but kept paying for BMW's daylight-robbery warranty (OK, robbery with a smile and superb service!). But finally after an argument in which Cooper Reading wanted to literally hacksaw off my allow wheels because the nuts were too tight (I kid you not!) I resigned myself to finding an alternative.

I asked a friend who has an ageing but good condition 328 and he recommended K&M Auto-Technik. See separate review. Suffice to say that Cooper Reading would now have to pay me to touch my car. They take forever to answer the phone - 30 mins holding to book a service was not unusual - but the front desk staff are very polite. Charges are typically astronomical.

Also:

30/01/06: calling to book is hopeless - left on hold for ages, never call back when promised, car often not ready when promised.

Took my 18 month old 5 series in for them to test intermittent uneven running. Hard to reproduce but all they could suggest was that I bring the car in when it next happened. As the problem comes and goes this is not going to be easy.

For the next service I used Sytner at High Wycombe who collected and retrned the car on time. I justmentioned to the collection driver that I had a problem with lumpy tickover from time to time and they phone to tell me that the problem was a duff injector which was replaced under warranty. Fuel consumption improved from 40 mpg to 43 mpg. Only one small issue which as that incorrect mileage was entered in service booklet. Think I'l continue to use them.

Also:

04/03/06: Came back from Scotland ok next day car was running uneven on tickover took it to Coopers

My valve burnt out on number 4 cylinder, the head they said was warped so had to be skimmed. £2,301.17p Oh yes and that included 3 sidelight bulbs all lights where working before taking car in I found 3 a odd figure. Asked them to replace or advise about any thing else that looked worn while head was off totaly ignored me.

Engine does sound and run ok now I do over 200 mile a week. Is it just me or does any one else find that repair expensive ? Had courtesy car for 2 weeks no charge.

Also:

12/04/06: Took Airbag light problem in to Coopers Friday lunchtime (admittedly without appointment - light had only just come on); they took over 2hours ("while you wait") to diagnose and reset and charged £45 for the 4minutes (their time sheet) it eventually took! See Clifton Motors report. Only good bit was a free cup of coffee supplied promptly, but won't be visiting again.

Also:

24/04/06: My first BMW, Big mistake taking it to Coopers BMW in Reading. When i got my car back it had been driven over 60 miles. BMW advised me that this did not happen. strange that my petrol tank which was filled the night before with 58liters of petrol was able to hold another 8 liters after my service. the petrol tank is only 60liters, so where did the petrol go? or did my tank expand by 6 liters? also my mileage reading showed 60 miles extra. BMW state that my sensor has become faulty, but it seems that BMW use customer Vehicles for their own use. Customer service not good. Should have stayed with VW.

Also:

04/06/06: Expensive average service car returned with a broken indicator that apparently was noticed before the service but not mentioned to me until it fell off within 50 meters of the garage. I had to wait over an hour for it be fixed and pay the labour.

Wear Jeans and you won't be offered a coffee in reception. Much preferred Altwood in Maidenhead.

Bare minimum dealer. Atmosphere like Wall Street in the 80's. Car returned clean though!

Also:

01/09/06: Called in at the garage to get prices for servicing my 93 plate 525i Touring as the Inspection 2 was looming. £275 sir they said. We reduce the servicing costs on all cars over 5 years of age. Does that cover everything listed in the service book? Yes sir. Can't be bad I thought, and promptly booked the car in. The big day arrives and I take the old beast in for its service as they dont collect. We'll call you when its finished they said, so I Picked up my courtesy car and went to work. No phone call by 16:30, so I called them. Oh yes sir, its been ready for hours!! Arrive at Coopers at about 17:00. That'll be £375 please sir. Pardon? £375 please sir. But you said it would be £275.. Ah yes..but the gearbox and rear axle oil is extra....£100 extra? Not easy to change sir, and it was badly needed!

So, my advise is be very careful if you take an older car in for servicing here. Personaly I'll be looking for another garage/dealer in the future.

Also:

20/06/07: Excellent garage, very helpful staff, take an interest in the vehicle. Always valet the vehicle, leaving it very clean, inside and out (including the boot, if it is cleared out!). Expensive, but worth it overall.

Also:

26/06/07: Bought my 3rd E38, wanted to get inspection 2, so called around for quotes, Cooper Reading came in cheapest. Took car in, only to be told that brake fluid and coolant would be extra, other dealers and independents had included this on their quote. Asked to see Manager, after sales manager came out clearly itching for a fight, very patronising, admitted they should have asked if brake fluid and coolant needed replacing, and quoted accordingly, offered a 'free valet'.

Wasted my morning, I'm not paying £560 for a service which they quoted £355 for, and which Prestigecarservicing quoted £379 for.

Worst thing was the arrogant approach by the staff, which seems to be a very common theme when dealing with a main dealer over an older car.

Things have not improved since lodging a complaint with BMW UK, customer services seem to be a joke within this organisation, however I would suggest that everybody complains to BMW UK when they get bad dealer service, and maybe they'll start to take it seriously.

David Hearn Motor Engineers Reading 30/01/07: David Hearn, has been looking after all my cars for a number of years. I bought a BMW 330i se and took it along to David when it developed a noise from the engine he diagnosed

the water pump bearing and rectifed the fault. Some months later when the service was nearly due engine power did not seem as good as it should be. Booked the car in for a service 2 with David, advised of all the problems, david checked the ECU at service and advised of fault codes, cleared them and re checked after test drive. I also had a spark plug that was corroded into the cylinder head, David managed to remove this wouthout having to helicoil, the engine power is now better than ever and car drives so much better after the service.

If you have a BMW and are looking for a garage that is non franchise for a resonable service, I recommend that you try David Hearn.

Scotthall BMW Cambridge High standard of work, but dealer prices. Good customer care, regular work up-dates by phone.
Elms Cambridge
also
Cambridge BMW X5. They charged £500 after we we put £10 of petrol in the diesel car. Have had to return the car 6 times to date to get fuel gauge working. Still not working. Assistant manager out of his depth. Service calls rarely returned. Shambles of a place. Don't go there.

Also:

21/05/06: A joke of a garage - they have had my car five times (maybe I am the fool for letting them have it!) to fix a central locking problem. Car won't open when the weather is hot - only door will open is drivers with key - rest remained sealed shut - therefore car is effectively now a 1 seater! For over 8 mnths they have tried to fix it - always guaranteeing the best service and it still does not work and I have spent hundreds! I am returning tomorrow to demand a full refund or I go to the press!

Also:

31/07/06: If you want a main dealer that really knows how to charge whilst offering nothing in the way of customer service this is your chance. They do get the job done eventually as you might expect at £180 + vat per hour for labour but you will have to persevere to even get them to answer the phone when you call.... good luck with being put through to the service department.

Save yourself the agro and call Scothall instead.

Also:

24/08/07: Elms treats me as if I'm taking in an E60 M5 even though I actually give them a 10 year-old E36 M3 Evo. The hourly labour charge looks ridiculous, but I have found that they complete work in no time and labour seems to be charged in 10-minute chunks, so the final bills aren't as much as you might expect. They were even competitive with tyre prices.

I have twice taken my M3 to Elms for repair expecting an extortionate bill and been pleasantly surprised.

You may be interested in the service charges for the M3 Evo, which needs keeping in overnight to cool down for Ins I and II:

Oil: ~ £250 Ins I: ~ £750 Ins II: ~ £900

Note: Elms in Gt Shelford used to be Scotthall.

Elms Bedrord Bedford 10/01/08: Very nice to deal with, oil service and new remote key supplied and programmed, just over £300, the key was cheaper to buy and program than one for a focus. they have now given me the 4 year plus servicing memebership with an inspection 2 costing £275, very pleased with all aspects of this dealer.
Elms Stanstead 21/09/07: Desperately poor at diagnosing faults, and always seemed to want to choose the diagnosis that involved spending the most money.

Took three or more visits each to resolve fuel leak from engine and faulty washer pump. Tried to deny there was fuel leak until I took the head mechanic outside and showed him the fuel vapour coming off the engine...

Salesperson told us there was no noticeable difference in performance between 316 and 318, but - guess what - didn't have a 318 to sell at that point.

Used them for 10+ years from 1990 until 2000 but wouldn't ever bother again. Avoid unless desperate.

Scotthall BMW
and
Eastleigh, Hampshire Keen to please on the surface... and you DO get a call from BMW a week or so after a service to see how you rated them. Pretty useless at diagnosis/repairs though and there is no follow up calls for this (more's the pity!). Couldn't fix my 5-series steering judder, or the foull smell from the aircon, despite repeated attempts. Car once came back with all tyres 6lb below normal pressure - and I didn't notice 'til I checked them after 100 miles! In shrt, ok for straightforward servicing - but not much else.

also:

Top notch bunch. Parts department know their onions and the service people are helpful, courtious and knowledgable. And bonus points for no-one ever referring to my car as "old", even at 10 years!

Service prices seem reasonable and, from what I've heard about some BMW dealers, relatively cheap!

Best experience. My '94 325 was in for a service and MoT. The service chap was going through the bill with me and noticed he hadn't billed for the MoT: "Never mind," was his succint comment. Most places would have been out with the biro before you knew it!

also:

VERY patchy.. Failed to correctly diagnose an overheating problem TWICE, high (service) staff turnover AND pricey. Despite being polite and reasonably efficient, they do give you the idea that they really only want to deal with the 'simple' things in life.

Also:

Took my 4 year old 323 to them, for inspection 1. Did the job well and called me before they fitted new pads and brake discs on the front. Prices reasonable but had to remind them to give me the four plus discount on payment.

Scotthall BMW
and
Chandler's Ford, Hampshire My beloved "52" plate 3 series convertible enters the Scotthall dealership in Hampshire with more faults than features. It comes out two days later alleged "fixed", soon apparent to me that non-existant brakes, missing trim on the hood, rattling exhaust/other parts haven't been touched. Back in again yesterday with no outlook on what the rattling under the car is...despite taking them out for a roadtest where they clearly heard the noise, it remains a mystery - wouldn't ask them to service my lawnmower!

Also:

I enquired into some trim repair work required for my 52 plate Mini Cooper. Scotthall agreed to cover the repair under warranty, and this was confirmed on the job card before the car was repaired. Once they had completed the repair, they told me I owed £90, and that they wouldn't hand my car back without me paying up. How could they do this, hand me a bill once the repair was completed? They promised a warranty repair before the job was done.

I will never step foot in their facility again, and would advise caution if you wish to use them. Their after-sales service is awful.

Also:

17/05/07: Inspection 2, all fluids & other work.

On arrival I was treated politely and professionally by Gary and his staff. I specifically asked for my car not to be valet washed ( my choice). Staff later took the time to clearly explain what had been done and to explain any later work recommendations. I was told that some minor additional work was recommended as carried out on second visit. Dealer kindly submitted an application for consideration under the BMW Goodwill scheme regarding historic but repeated mirror issue as later sorted on a “whilst I waited” basis. For information I was also told that cars aged 6 years or older now attract a “6 Plus” discounted labour rate (50% cheaper than that of new cars) , of just £56.04 per hour plus vat. He told me this hourly rate included M powered cars ! Oil was quoted at £8 per litre, (£10.50 for M cars which attract the same discounted labour rate).

I am not a great fan of main dealer experiences but overall I would comment that Scothall is a busy dealership with polite staff, good service & prices lower than some other quoted. Highly recommended from me on this occasion but should this changed for any reason in the future I will politely but happily say it exactly as it is.

Scotthall BMW Finchley, North London Sold me an 02 330Ci Conv. Which basically fell apart over the following 6 months. Was in Cooper's Banstead (who are excellent) 24 times in 6 months. Scotthall didn't care, refused to take the car back, even when pressured to do so by BMW GB. They don't return phone calls. The car needed new brakes and tyres within a week of collecting it, and I had to threaten the Sales Manager with physical violence before he agreed to cover half the cost of the brakes.

Also:

10/03/07: Useless is not a word enought: oil service at 140 pounds to found out they charge me, reset the car computer, kept the car 2 days and when i check the next day the oil was all black. after complaining a lot they took back the car to check and denied any wrongdoing, funny thing was after the oil was all clear. LIAR

Scotthall Ruislip North West Londonn (same as above?) 06/04/06: My 1999 BMW 328 car went in for a brake fluid change three weeks ago. On the way back home a couple of miles away I discovered that the car was pulling towards one side. Thought nothing of it, thinking wheel or tracking problem. Next day after investigation that the calliper had siezed. Scotthall Ruislip said that it was a coincidence and that they don't test the brakes even after a complete brake fluid change. BMW Customer Service asked Scotthall Ruislip at least 5 times times to call me about how to get my car back on the road. I was left without transport for a week and sent multiple Emails, leaving messages twice a day.

I have not heard from them since they initially said that the problem was already there and to bring the car back in where they will verify if the condition pre-existed or was a result of their work. I wanted clarification of how they would determine if that was the case and if I could quote him word for word.

I would have noticed in the 30 miles from work to the garage in stop-start traffic and when they were bleeding the brakes they should have noticed when or faing that, refilling the fluid. Sounds of deliberate tampering or at the least negligence to increase revenue from servicing.

Haven't heard from BMW Customer service or Scotthall's John North Rob Emerson or Jardine Motors (Owners of the BMW Franchise), so concluded that they don't care about cars older than 4 years as their main revenue comes from company cars, where the owners don't complain as typically their leasing companies pay for the "extra" work beyond the normal servicing.

I had the damage rectified by a local independant garage and yes, they tested that the brakes worked. I will do my research and find an independant BMW specialist next time...the things we have to do to have the correct stamps in the servicing book!!!!. One good remark is that they did a good job of washing the car.

Also:

22/05/06: Responsive to customers and friendly. Have problems with one particular customer advisor - he quotes too high and gives always the most expensive options. Other advisors don't.

One time he called me from his personal mobile to offer me alternative quotes from outside scotthall.

Lately, I was having problem with right rear shock (rattling)- they quoted me for replacing both left & right - unfair and immoral. Looking to move away to independent specialist.

Also:

10/06/06: Appalling service bordering on criminal. Work billed for, that I am now very sure did not take place. Avoid at all costs.

Also:

07/03/07: Sat on my car for 2 weeks once I had agreed price for Inspection 2, belts, and a handful of other items. They then asked me to collect it when they found they could not rip me off for shocks and disks all round. I wanted to keep full BM history on what is a 22 year old car with only 42k miles, but after going through this experience you would need to pay me to go to a BMW Dealer.

Scotthall Hampshire
also
Southampton, Hampshire Simply the best BMW dealership I have ever been to (and I have been to a few). I first went to them when I had a high mileage E36 325tds. I was treated extremely well by the service staff. A year later I was back, but this time it was to buy a car from them. The sales staff were polite, professional and extremely helpful. I have taken my car in for minor niggles (handbrake becoming loose, headlamp cover misting, seat back becoming loose). ALL were repaired under warranty and while I waited. I live 80 miles away from the dealership and will always go back to them.

Also:

31/05/07: Overpriced as you would expect from BMW dealer - good customer service when booking and havr the usual dealer facilities of rest area/drinks etc but v poor customer service after the car was done and bill paid!

Am looking for an independent specialist in Southampton - I undestand there is Bartley and Brystone - what have others experienced at these??

Bartley BMW Totton, Southampton, Hampshire 21/01/06: Independent BMW specialist- What can I say? Fantastic service and knowledge. Every BMW I've had has been to Bartley BMW, and I've had a thew in my time! Good service and quality of service and alot less cost that main dealer.

Also:

29/07/06: OCT 05 Had my car serviced there whilst on a course. Brilliant service, good value and honest competent owner managed Specialist BMW Business. Just wished I lived nearer.

Also:

22/08/06: Took my 5 series for Inspection 2, Oil and collant service - The job was completed on time, all ofthe other issues ere dealt with, and the total bill was half that of a main dealer. Subsequently I have had other jobs completed whilst I have waited, and the service and quality of work has been absolutly first class. If you have a BMW, and are in the area - Please go there!!!!

Also:

01/08/06: Phoned to book for a new exhuast to be fitted, the guy said 'let us have a look before you spend lots of money'. Took it in and it was only a bracket, cost next to nothing. Honest guys - worth the drive.

Also:

07/01/07: Fabulous service, stuck to the fixed price service quote, called me before doing the extra wpork required to get the car through an MOT. Call when my car was ready to collect.Helpful explanation in plain English when I collected my car by the machanic who had worked on the car.

Cant fault BARTLEY at all - will be using them in future - shame they only do BMWs really!!

Also:

31/05/07: Really impressed. Busy but very courtious and efficient. Stuck to agreed price, reported various other work required that had been missed by BMW dealer recently - not pressured into getting the jobs deon. Honest useful advice. Will def use again.

Hampshire Cars Basingstoke I am very impressed with recent repairs to my E36 323i Coupe. I noticed it was losing coolant, phoned them for help and they colleted my car in less than an hour. A new radiator was fitted and the car was spotlessly cleaned, inside and out.

Also:

I was impressed with this authorised workshop. The technicians really do come across as very professional and the booking in staff are well spoken. Had my E36 trailing arm bushes replaced. The car was collected and delivered repaired and clean. Paid over the phone and even got a huge discount on the labour for being a first time customer. Its a shame the main dealers arent as good.

Keylink Basingstoke On my E30 they changed out the lock barrels in the doors. Took a bit longer than anticipated but I was a bu##er of a job and I was looked after and they charged me what they quoted! Great!
Victoria, Bromley
also
Bromley, Kent Mixed bag. Bought my car from them and was impressed during handover. However, recent Oil Service was deeply unimpressive; forgot to stamp service book, chipped instrument panel and was kept waiting & waiting.

Also:

Never Again! I brought my 3-series there because i had en electrical problem with my climate control, a problem with my clutch and my airco wasn't working anymore.

They plugged the computer on and it reported "problem with the climate control" and they had a look and their conclusion was "a new climate control panel" for £200 + £150 labour = £350. Yet after searching on the internet, i found a common fault with E36 and re-soldered a thermistor on the control panel and it's now fixed - price £0.15.

Second problem - the aircon - they told me it needed regassing - £200 + labour. After I fixed the climate control panel, the airco worked fine again!!!

3-rd problem the gearbox, they told me it was unrepairable and quoted me £2000 for a new gearbox. however, the gearbox problem is only in 2nd gear and i had a second opinion from a gearbox specialist they told me they can repair it for 300.

Man - I paid £125 for the diagnostics report (read: the 5-minute computer test and 5 minute typing a report). They wanted to charge me £2600 in total to REPLACE all faulty components, obviously the car is not even worth £5k anymore I think they are a rip-off and can't be bothered to look into detail too much.

Also i had my inspection 1 done there, and after a month i found a rusty exhaust-pipe holder that snapped off - how can they overlook this???

Never and Never again!!!

Whitehouse Bromley BMW (formerly Victoria)
SEE ABOVE
Bromley, Kent 29/07/06: I can't think of a single good thing to write about this dealership! Problems as follows:

1) Useless repair company; performed off-site in Peckham; awful paintwork; unfitted parts; lost parts!

2) Expensive

3) Do not return calls

4) WANTED TO CHARGE ME £20 TO DRILL ONE (YES, ONE) NUMBER PLATE HOLE. THIS WAS DESPITE ME PURCHASING A NEW CAR FROM THEM ONLY 2 WEEKS PRIOR. HAD TO COMPLAIN TO WHITEHOUSE GROUP TO MAKE PROGRESS.

5) TINY PREMISES, WITH ALMOST NO CUSTOMER-PARKING.

6) 0870-We'll-Rip-U-Off Phone Number

Oh, and the only good sales-advisor (Mr. A. Lombardi) has now moved-on to a different dealership.

Despite them being my local stealer (5mins drive), I go to Battersea BMW!

Synter / Cooper Harold Wood
and
Essex Excellent service from main dealer. Special rates for older cars. Friendly staff knowledgeable on older BMWs. Sexy girl at the main desk a bonus!

Also:

From new replaced suspension within six weeks. Two weeks later same again though "engineer" could find no fault. Has got progressively worse now 4 years on extended warranty does not cover faulty suspension that they couldn't find under warranty. Very expensive for the basic items also. Can't give me an answer over phone as to cost of service but will be itemised when i collect and pay for vehicle. Not prepared to listen to complaint or reasoning. Sorry just very bad service.

Also:

29/07/06: got my car back today after a basic safty check/brake fluid change and radiator flush, came back with radiator light on, leaking oil from under car the safety check should have shown up a big chunk missing from one side walls of the front tyre (great safety check!!!) and all for the small price of £224.00 (not bad eh considering had nothing wrong with it when it went in). will not be using again

Also:

29/03/07: Car came back from service after driving a few miles noticed fumes car running unevenly. Opened bonnet oil everywhere, bmw technicians had not put the oil cap back on following the oil change!

Sytner City (Stratford)
and
East London Shocking !. I took my car in for the SMG recall and within 12 mile of leaving the garage had various arning lights on, ended up spending 3 hrs on the side of the M11 as my alternator blew. Since still have not recieved apology and have also lost part of my toolkit on previous visist, still waiting to get that cleared up, they DO NOT get back to you when promised and are impossible to get hold of in the 1st place - DO NOT GO

Also:

Average - I'd like to feel I was getting a personalised service but didn't. A call to let me know the state of play didn't come on teh day I expected and I had to chase to get an update. Inspection 2 carried out as I would expect. Car cleaned. OK.. Nothing too wrong, nothing too right. Is 3/5 stars average or 2/5? MMmm.. need to get the half star added in.

Also:

27/04/06: My 728 was in for minor body damage repair. It took them over 2 months (!) and it had to go back in 3-4 times to sort out loads of problems like: the door they repaired couldn't close, electric faults with most of the rear lights, electric boot didn't work anymore, the seat belt was put back in wrong, the car was filthy and so on... Basically most of the bits they had touched had new faults. Have still not received any official apology or compensation. Worst garage ever!

Also:

13/06/06: Took my 2003 M3 in for 1st main service, hard work to get anyone on the phone, paid nearly £1000 for service only the car to be filthy when I collected, hand break had not been adjusted, also advised that car was on recall for bottom end bearings, that was two weeks ago, work was done, just watched my car being taken away on a low loader as my garage floor is now covered in oil from leaks, not impressed!!

Also:

29/07/06: hmm, posted the last comment about oil leak after bottom end work, drove my M3 for no less than 60 miles and the engine mgmt light is stairing at me to say something is wrong, 2yrs of happy motoring and reliability and one service has killed this, going back tomorrow for the 2nd time in two weeks. The biggest cheek was that they said that if the car broke down on the way there I would have to pay for recovery vehicle! use this garage at your peril!!

High Wycombe John Yeats is ex BMW mechanic who left because of the poor quality of workmanship BMW were providing. The workmanship is always first class. He will only do what's needed and is always willing to advise. His knowledge seems second to none and he's a really approachable guy

Saw the posting above for J&D. It's all true. Brilliant workmanship, very knowledgable . Excellent value for money too - definitely will use them again.

Also:

At last, A company in the UK that provides good service, infact exceptional service. I called him on Saturday morning to replace my starter motor, he did the job the very same day without any hassle and very inexpensive, everyone else was quoting me ridiculous amounts and at best a few weeks later, John is extremely knowledgeable and very helpful in all matters I chatted to him about the BMW. I would recommend him everytime for all BMW matters, why would anyone go to the BMW dealers when you can get this level of quality service at a third of the price.

I had all the brakes changed on my 728 by John and his team. They did this on a Saturday. John most importantly, knew his stuff, did the work in front of me and was a nice bloke, someone you'd have a beer with. It was a 160 mile round trip for me, won't being going anywhere else from now on.

Also:

John is a star. I read the comments above and geve him a try from London. He straight away gave me a diagnosis on my 318i SI and repaired it while I waited at a cost less than what was quoted for diagonistic by the Main Dealer. I will always take my car to him.

Also:

Don't be put off by the look of the place .... they are exceptionally competent, helpful, honest and inexpensive. I'll be using them for all future work on my 6 year old 740i.

Also:

Discovered by browsing these pages, impressed by the North London Day tripper (as I am too) and I can understand it completely. Competant, affable, sensible and helpful. Recommended. Beware the loan car -you can grow spuds in it!

Also:

12/02/06: Brilliant! You tend to assume that this level of service doesn't exist anymore. John and Mark are fantastic, good value, helpful, friendly, all jobs done on time and they know their stuff. I take my 635 to them from South London. Well worth a trip for service this good. Surely unbeatable!

Also:

07/04/06: Took my 2001 530 to them for Inspection 1. Fantastic service, very reasonable prices. Will never use a main dealer again!

Also:

03/07/06: In desparate need to have my brake pads on my 3 series e36 looked at after the indicator came up. Had no idea whether front or rear or both. After being fobbed off by sharp suited school kids that work for BMW main dealers I tried J&D after reading comments on this site.

Put it this way, if you have a BMW and can make it to John in High Wycombe then ur life is simple. I called him at 7.40am on the off chance I could leave a voicemail, but instead i got John who booked my car in the same day!

Superb service and VALUE! BMW main dealers need to send their cars to J&D who know what to do with them. WARNING! BMW MAIN DEALERS BEWARE YOUR DAYS ARE NUMBERED!

Also:

TOOK MY E36 TO HIM & HE SORTED OUT MY PROBLEMS THAT S.JAMES BMW COULD NOT FIND. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND J & D MOTORS.

Also:

14/02/06:After using many so called BMW Specialists I have arrived at the true professional. John has worked on my car on a few occassions and the quality of workmanship is superb. He has a keen focus on customer care which reflects in his competitive and fair pricing.

Also:

15/06/07: Took my 2001 M3 to John after a massive quote from BMW of over 3 grand. He was very helpful and managed to get the part i required and fitted it at a much reduced price and the car was ready in 2 days with the added bonus of the eventual cost being less than he originally quoted. His can do attitude and professionalism ment i decided to service the car with him as well, getting this done by someone other than a BMW dealer would never crossed my mind before. He was not intimidated by taking on such major work on such a high performance car. Highly recommended.

Also:

06/07/07: Another five stars for J & D! (E34 540i touring). Fitted new front driver door inc re-spray, which also took out a nasty keying scratch on front wing, for less than half what I was being quoted in London.

Also replaced dampers resulting in the car handling like new, very impressed.

Very refreshing to find someone like John who is completley trustworthy, dilligent and very amiable, well worth the trip from London (train station 2 mins walk). I'll be going back for sure.

Also:

29/07/06: My car had a problem whereby it would occasionally stall in hot weather at idle speed. Asked a BMW dealer to hook up their computer for the fault codes so that i can do the work myself. No chance you must book the car in for a service.

Anyhow went down to j & D on the basis of the above reviews and straight away the mechanic gets his diagnostic code reader and tells me Crank position sensor. Fantastic. I tried to offer him some money for this but he wouldn't take it. If any jobs i can't do myself arise, this is the place my car will be going.

Also:

03/08/06: Brilliant Brilliant. My 10 year old 528 was diagnosed by BMW Cooper Reading and my local garage as having blown a head gasket after overheating and was either uneconomic to repair or would be at least £1,500.

After reading the reports on this web-site I got the car taken to J&D Vehicles. The result - a broken water pump impeller - cost about £120 parts and labour fitted.

Met Mark and John - very very friendly guys - would agree about not being put off by the look of the place - these guys are the real deal.

Also:

13/10/06: I've used them for over two years. They've serviced my BMW 318 1999 and also replaced my thermostat. Very honest, pleasant staff. I will not bring my BMW to anyone else.

Also:

13/10/06: John knows his staff about BMW's He is a real star... I have taken my 318i SI to him for 2 years and he has been very good at diagonistics. Best of all his prices are realy reasonable. As highlighted before, the only downside is the looks of the Garage itself... Please dont be put off by this... You will get a quality job done at very reasonable prices. Also very friendly team...

Also:

23/12/06: Another unreserved recommendation for John and Mark at J&D Vehicle Repairs in High Wycombe. Took my E46 to them after being told that the Cam and Lambda sensors needed replacing, John opened the bonnet and within 2 seconds realised that it was just a blown breather tube and valve. Result? A bill of £100 instead of £300. These guys know their BMWs inside out, are honest as the day is long, and treat you like a real customer rather than a chequebook on legs. Superb.

Also:

07/02/07: Impressed! After reading comments on this page i decided to give them a ring about my "window judder" on my E36 convertible. John himself answered the phone & set about helping me resolve this issue. Impressed.

Also:

12/04/07: Visited J&D for an Oil service and front discs & pads on my 03 e39 530d touring. Great service, very friendly and honest. Agree with others not to be pit off by the state of the garage - judge them by the quality of their work and their prices - superb. Gavin.

Also:

04/05/07: I have had my 328 for the last 2.5 years and have had BMW and local garages servicing the car. Took it to john who found all sorts of problems with the car including rear springs that were snapped, brake pads with no springs fitted, no evidence of gearbox and diff oil changes. John sorted these problems and others along with a complete inspection II and MOT all within the day. Extremely honest guys, will only do the work that needs doing and are full of sound advice. Going to see John increased my journey to work that day by 60 miles - worth every extra mile - my cars feels like its new again!

Also:

16/10/07: O yeh BABY John & Mark did it again!.. Ever broken down on the M25 in Brentwood driving your precious E46 with no warning whatsoever? ..I HAVE! One phone call to John and hes diagnosed a faulty crank shaft exhauset sensor OVER THE PHONE! Had my car towed to John 24hrs later I was back on the road! barely felt a pinch in my pocket :) AA the 4th emergency service i dnt think so ..more like JD!

Also:

25/10/07: I was tired of the cental london garages ripping me off when it came to servicing my 728i. I finally made the journey out to J & D and it was worth the effort. They were really professional in there work, and better than any BMW main garage I have used. There workshop is very close to a railway station which runs into London Marylebone. I highly recommend them and will use again.

Also:

02/07/07: Great quality work, reasonable prices and friendly, knowledgable service - couldn't ask for more really. I travel from London and it's well worth the trip. They are very near a train station too which will get you to London in 45 minutes.

Also:

14/11/07: John has been looking after my car (2001 e38 728i Sport, 80k miles) for the last couple of years, and does an excellent job. After years of Scotthall, Elms, Cooper, Stratsone, etc, it was a real pleasure to finally meet someone who new more about my car than me! He obviously has great affection both for the marque and individual cars, old and new. John also has the fantastic - and perhaps unique in the world of BMW - habit of actually taking the time to SHOW YOU the area and/or part of your car that is in need of attention and/or replacement. As others have mentioned, the place itself is not much to look at, but don't let that put you off - John's friendliness, honesty and integrity more than trump the flashiness of the various BMW dealers. Bottom line: even if his rates were the same as BMW's, I'd still take my car to him.

Also:

29/11/07: An excellent job dome finding the cause of my Z3's cutting out problem that the useless team at Scotthall Ruislip could not, or probably did not want to find as under approved used car warranty. New throttle housing fitted at reasonable price and car as good as new. Will go to J & D again.

Comments above about the state of the works and location are correct, but staff and the dog are very friendly!! A tip for those collecting a car on a dark evening coming from the station - take a torch!! Its very dark on the industrial park.

Also:

14/01/08: I live in France and have a 93 525 tds on which I am changing the head and needed some advice on torquing down the head. Just to say that they could not have been more helpful. The first guy that I spoke with told me his thoughts and then passed me on to another guy who checked up on the settings and gave me his advice. As others have said, they are extremely helpful which is rare in this day and age....

Also:

28/01/08: J and D fixed it in one worth the trip. My E39 BMW 540 developed an intermittent ASC light then engine misfire, typically, first thing after which it would run O/K for miles. Local attempts to find a cause failed so I asked BMW Woods Odiham to diagnose. They suggested inlet manifold gasket leakage was the most probable cause. Not convinced I arranged for J & D to have a go and within hours Mark at J & D isolated the cause to be a faulty Mass Air Flow meter, Camshaft Sensor and one minor injector seal leak. Despite 147k this engine runs sweet again. Highly recommended.

also:

04/01/08: These guys deserve all the credit given on this site. Took my X5 to them for a problem others could not diagnose. A drive from North London but worth it, as now all is running fine. I am glad I found this site and would recommend them to anyone that want a good mecanic you can trust.

also:

25/04/08: Have taken my 530d here twice, both occasions have been dealt with quickly and efficiently. Would seriously recommend this garage to anyone in the london area. Saunderton railway station nearby so you can train it home if need be! Both times the work was completed for less than the amount quoted. Time was taken to explain what work was carried out and why, even offered recon parts if possible to reduce bill. Took really good care of my car and got it back up to as new spec.

also:

02/06/08: Great service - found them through this site. Very surprised at the difference between these guys and other garages. Don't be put off by the dog and location. Inspection 2 and other bit done for a very good rate - half some BMW main dealer prices. Close to station for Londoners. Will travel the 30 miles again.

Ocean BMW
and
Falmouth Booked the car in, ten day wait. for a overheating problem. Then waited 2 weeks till I could collect it. Cost 800.00 for a new radiator. And I have still got the original problem!!

Also:

Have used them on a number of occasions. The repairs manager was excellent and sorted my insurance company out for me when I was having problems with them. Only problem is that when you need them for simple repiars, there seems to be a two week waiting time - is this a good sign though?

Ocean Plymouth Plymouth, Devon One of the snottiest BMW dealerships around - second only to Chandlers in Brighton - and the reason why I didn't buy a BMW 320 Ci. Their motorcycle sales team are just as bad.

Also:

Tried them twice. Enquired about the Z4 when it first came out. Wouldn't even return phone calls. Went to see them and they couldn't really care less...so bought a new Audi TT roadster instead!

Also:

Have a Z3 2.8 and BMW 530d have used them but did not buy cars from them. Had to agree with snooty comments tried to book a test drive in M3 they did not want to know. Very expensive for repairs but did fix problems other garages would not tackle. Never any loan cars available always seem to look down the nose when older cars are presented for repair 1999 530d, took two attempts to fix intermittant windscreen operation I sugested try thr relay which fixed the problem

Specialist Vehicles Ltd Plymouth, Devon 09/06/06: Excellent independent BMW/Audi specialist, dealer and servicing. Courteous and professional.

Much cheaper than a main agent, aware of all the usual known faults and the cheapest ways to fix them. saved a packet over the main agent prices.

Chandlers
and
Brighton Took my 740 to them for servicing and parts. Expensive, but very good service, they even managed to find where the sim card went in the phone when BMW hq had no idea.(the boot) And now I've had to sell my BMW for other reasons, I miss them, they leave the VW dealerships in the area when it comes to customer service.(I now have a passat) Would buy a car from them and service it with them anytime.

Also:

Took E46 in for new brake pads cost 260 outrageous price, also tried to con me into new discs as well, the cars has only done 12000 miles since brand new (from them!!) lost all faith

Also:

Tried buying a 7 Series from them once. It about 25 mins from closing time and the salesman had the cheek to tell me to hurry up! Stay away.

Also:

02/12/05: Last visit (approx 6mths ago) resulted in customer service issue that was handled terribly and had to be escalated to BMW head office before resolution. Caused immense stress. Vote with your feet and avoid!

Also:

06/05/07: I've just bought a used car there. They had just given it an inspection 2 serice to sell it and the AUC checks and an MOT. It had numerous faults including 2 that are safety items and MOT failures, like a handbrake that wouldn't hold the car on even a gentle gradient. The salesman wont return any calls after I've bought the car, neither will the after sales manager or the sales manager. I then phone the manager, but I'm told he's resigned a week ago due to problems with the new American parent company. All in all over 10 problems with the car. I was able to get hold of a guy in service who I have returned it to and he has done a good job of fixing the major problems. I'm now left with a car I have no confidence that the AUC check/service has been done on and I'm arranging the AA to do a check next wek at my own cost. Chandlers have been worse than I would have expected from a fly by night car trader. At least I know that I can hold Chandlers legally responsible for any further major problems uncovered by the AA, but with it being impossible to get a response from anyone senior, the legal route is the only resort I have left for the remaining items and anything serious found by the AA. I would never go near Chandlers again for a car and it has possibly unfairly lost my confidence in the AUC programme. On returning my car it also had big scratch marks on the centre console from someone's wedding ring when they used the handbrake and the cigarrette lighter was missing.

Chandlers
and
Worthing 29/11/06: Rubbish!had vibration & missfire problem with my E38,they changed the viscous fan coupling?Didnt cure fault surprisingly! now say it might be ignition coils @ £800 a set,but they are not sure till they change them??

Also:

28/04/07: 1) bought 2nd hand 320d touring and found a deep cut in a tyre sidewall the next day hidden behind black goo. they deemed it 'safe according to uk standards'.

2) they didn't inspect the clogged crankcase breather filter in a level II inspection - said it wasn't on their schedule. I replaced it myself and immediately noticed a big difference in performance.

also:

17/09/07: Excellent service, friendly and very helpful. They've worked on both my 520i and 330D Sport and all work has been top notch. Pricing very competitive.

also:

10/04/08: Very poor Service from them, pin dent in the car upon return to me. They say it was there when I droped it off which i strongly disagree with. I asked for a copy of the service sheet but the one they sent appears to be dated a different day and shows a damage 'x' in a different place to the dent and also an 'x' on the opposite side of the car where there is no damage at all. If you do use them make sure you walk round the car with them and make sure they sign that there is no damage before you leave !!. I for one would not wish to use them ever again !!

Erniegrip Motors
and
Oxfordshire As featured in Total BMW Magazine. Really know their stuff. Reasonable prices, don`t try to rip you off!

Also:

Honest and fairly inexpensive, one of the better garages in the area.

Also:

Excellent service. Resolving some complex problems on my Z1 and made my Merc 320 diesel run sweeter than ever.

Also:

Graham's very friendly and helpful and sounds like he knows his stuff, but not cheap and I found his work sloppy - ie. leaving the alarm on my M3 switched off, which I didn't find out until the battery in my fob ran flat! Also failed to solve a friends problem, but charged nearly £200 which included an unnecessary oil change and then gave up blaming a dodgy computer. I later found the real solution on the internet - common problem, £10 replacement part needed. Not impressed.

Having said that, servicing is cheaper than a dealer - I'll probably return just to keep the "BMW specialist" stamp in the book but wouldn't trust with anything else.

Also:

outstanding service courtesy car supplied as,reqd fixed electrics on my e 39 that main dealer could not very helpfull use them again plus my friend swears by them

Also:

I have taken my last 2 BMWS here over the last 10 years for services and for various faults within the cars.I have found them to be both very reasonably priced, and the staff very helpful. I recently had a complex cool system problem, which north oxford motors said they were unable to fix,Erniegrip Motors were able to fix it for a very reasonable price, and even loaned me a courtesy car whilst it was being fixed which was both clean and reliable.Definately the best BMW specialist in the area for both cost, customer care and reliability, would highly recommened them to anyone else.

Also:

02/02/06: my bmw had a starting issue that north oxon garage were unable to fix graham sorted it at a sensible price appeared to be very busy and everybody in reception i spoke to were well pleased with the service deserves every sucsess friendly helpfull and very switched on to bmw also had a lot of mercedes in the garage

Also:

01/08/06: ErnieGrip has a captive audience at the Renault F1 factory just down the road offering collection and return.

However - He serviced my BMW and claimed a fail on the emissions due to a failed Lambda sensor. It raised my suspicions when he returned the car with the emissions test sheet showing PASS, (no work had been done yet) A quick retest at a local garage showed no problem with emmisions or the sensor. Upon asking around at work nearly everyone I spoke to had been caught on the same thing and just paid the £70 to have the sensor "Replaced" Would not reccomend at all.

Also:

31/1/07: Fantastic independant specialist in BMW and Mercs as well as all other makes, Sorted my 3 series out even when main dealer had no idea.

Mark Purcell Ltd. Oxford 08/12/06: Good BMW specialist near the BMW Mini plant in Oxford - never have found them unless recommended by a mate - but inexpensive, quality servicing, easily fixed a niggling problem North Oxford had missed - and at half the price.

Also:

29/07/06: I don't know who made the last comment but I can only beleive it was a 'competitor'. I've used Mark for 12years now to service etc my 7 series chauffeur cars and he ALWAYS does an excellent job at a good price. Highly recommended to my clients also. Any BMW problems; this is the guy to ring!!

Also:

20/12/06: He's looked after my 535 for a few years - really knows his BMWs...believe he used to be @ North Oxford garage.

Reasonably priced and helpful. As with the comment posted above, you'd not know where he was but for a friend. He's based with Apex Performance on the trading estate on Peterlee Road, oxford.

Ashford Motorsport

and

Ashford, Kent H is one of the few, honest garage dealers I have come across. A very safe pair of hands. He runs a virtually mint E32 735 himself and walks the talk. Hes stopped me doing silly things and is the main reason my car is still cost affective. Can't praise him highly enough.

Also:

Both the guys here run E32's and have passion for all things BMW, good honest advice with a high standard of workmanship!

Also:

Get ripped off by this idiot! He can talk a good repair, but his working practice sucks! I think the owner "H" has put up the previous reviews as I can't beleive any of his customers would be as stupid as to go there twice, let alone recommend him

Also:

Hi, I am "H" the propriotor of Ashford Motorsport, I am replying to the comment posted implying that I have posted the previous comments myself, and my standards of work are below par, I invite whoever posted this either telephone or come and see me to discuss your greivance as I feel that the comment is unjust. I have plenty of customers who are more than happy with the service that we have provided to date and am unaware of any problems with work I have carried out. If I have had a dispute with a customer, I always try to work through the problem before the customer leaves the premisis, I am aware that everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but the comment is way off the mark.

Also:

Had a full service at this place a little while ago and while there is no doubt the owners are keen BM owners, I did not think the service justified the extortionate charges (more than BMW, no BMW stamp!) and they missed a major problem with the handbrake I'd expect them to pick up. That said they are helpful and knowledgeable but given their prices and what they missed, I doubt I'd go back. Sorry H.

Also:

03/09/06: I've used them for around 12yrs now with various cars. Their knowledge of BMW's (my 5 & &) is as good as it gets, and their workmanship, professionalism and pricing is both keen and beyond reproach. As a long term customer, and there are fair amount of us, and i don't trust my automotive toys to anyone else!

P.M.W. Chelmsford, Essex Peter specialises in prestige cars, provides and excellent service at an excellent price. Nothing is too much trouble here My 7 Series BMW developed a water pump problem and I had to be at an important business meeting the next morning. Peter rearranged his jobs, sourced a pump and stayed back until 23.00hrs to complete the job for me. I wouldnt go anywhere else.

Also:

Very Friendly, good value & fixed my 535i's brakes at very short notice. I've now booked my car in for a full Inspection II service, and my wife will be taking her car there as well.

Also:

Peter has been servicing my cars for 5 years, firstly my TVR and recently my Subaru WRX. Following the first service the TVR the car was completely transformed, for a uarter of the price of the TVR Dealer. He has recently completed computerised 4 wheel alignment on the Subaru, the ride and stability is Brilliant - Peter Thank You.

Also:

Peter serviced my M3, it now runs the best it's ever done. He's a credit! Many thanks Peter.

Also:

Used your site to find a reputable garage for my beloved 320Ci and found one! Peter did a marvellous job on the serviceing and a steering fault. Suberb! It was a 60 mile round trip but well worth it.

P.M.W. Iver Heath, Bucks Absolutely first rate, particularly on older cars like the E30 M3. Peter takes real care over every job, cleaning and adjusting things as he goes along. Does a lot of extra detail stuff without charge because he is so thorough. Your car is in very safe hands here. A satisfied customer of 3 years.
Kings Motor Services Westbury, Wiltshire Excellent response when I took my E34 M50 in with a disintegrated clutch release bearing with no prior notice. Car was finished & available on Monday. Full explanation given for the problem, shown the old parts and given a free courtesy car for the W/E. They specialise in Peugeots & Volvos but do service/repair BMW's as well.

Also:

My car was leaking from the radiator. Wood in Salisbury claimed it was damaged by a stone and wanted almost £400. Kings replaced it for less than £260 and showed that the radiator had actually blown. No stone damage at all.

Also:

19/01/06: Volvo specialist, used to look after my T5 and I was always impressed, particularly by the foreman - polite, helpful, gave very detailed explanations, showed me old parts etc.

I'm an automotive engineer, (although I never told him) and I never detected anything untoward happening. Not cheap, but I was used to doing the work myself until recently, so I guess I'm not being very objective - almost certainly cheaper than main dealer though.

Now I have a BMW and I'll be going back.

Ridge Garage
and
North London Independent garage, more than capable of servicing old-fairly new BMWs. Deal with Steve/Sham for your BMW needs, reasonable pricing and honest, just be very clear on what you want done and how.

Also:

High standards of customer care and service, booked an Inspection II on my E36 323sei auto Steve talked through service items and agreed a very competitive £240 (price checked with 3 other independants) was able to do the service the same week as booked and even replaced a corroded exhaust clamp within the agreed price, also did a warranty replacement elec door lock.

Steve advised that brake pads and discs and Front shock absorbers should be OK until next service. Car in garage at 8.45am ready by 4pm.

Also:

12/09/07: Repair needed to 2002 530D. Fixed quickly and with minimum of fuss. Owner (Steve) knows what he is talking about, and likes working on BMWs. Very reasonable rates. Take your BMW to him!

Also:

12/09/07: Repair needed to 2002 530D. Fixed quickly and with minimum of fuss. Owner (Steve) knows what he is talking about, and likes working on BMWs. Very reasonable rates. Take your BMW to him!

Also:

30/11/07: After reading of so many horror stories of other garages, took my 2001-318i to Steve. Great job, efficient and literally half the price of the main six sided shape dealerships

RAW Autos Croydon, Surrey Good, honest and reliable. They phone to let you know their findings before proceeding with repairs. Offer recommendations and advice. Good selection of new and used parts. Helpful and friendly. Very reasonable prices. Highly recommended.
Cooper BMW Burgh Heath Epsom, Surrey 28/01/06: Terrible. When My E38 broke down they fixed one problem but missed another, AND created a potentially lethal fault! Mechanics are paid a bonus for each car they sort! No care and attention for your pride and joy here.
Altwood Maidenhead
and

Maidenhead I asked them to look at a wiring fault on my 1992 525ise and the result was a 50 charge and 2 words in the report ' Wiring Fault'. Wouldn't trust them again.

Also:

I have a (96)523SEi, with BMW warranty. My car got picked up by BMW Mondial within 1.5hrs (as agreed). Got courtesy car for 10 days, got fairly good customer relationship on status of car after finding out Gasket, Raidator, Coolant, threads, had to be replaced (all covered by bmw warranty). Getting copies of report card sent to me by post. Overall ok service ! However got ripped of with Oil Service with 157 as that was done as well.

Also:

Phoned service team to arrange to take my K Reg. E36 318iS in to talk to a technician about a water leak, how serious it was and how much it would cost, and were aware I was at work 25 miles from home. Got to the service desk and was charged 15 to talk to a technician. The Water leak was coming from around the timing belt housing, so they did a preasure test which blew out the failing seal completely. Now the car wouldn't hold any water so I was now stranded and facing a 700+ bill as the head has to be removed to replace the 7.00 seal. Not happy with this forced situation I contacted BMW HQ in Bracknel who advised me to talk to the manager - he put up a fight but conceded to repair the car out of hours to reduce the labour cost (probably done by a trainee as the tensioner was now too tight causing a "verring" noise and was not going to be fixed free of charge). Would no trust them again as they also managed to replace front disc and pads twice in two years - once in a service and again when I still had a steering wobble when braking. Never again, too expensive. I suggest not going to garages in expensive and wealthy areas - they take advantage.

Also:

Rude pompous arrogant!!! Do you want to sell cars or not!

Very bad experience from several members of staff looking for 330ci. Bought car from somewhere else instead.

I suggest they all go on a customer service course and learn some manners! Never will considering buying from them in the future!! Pop in, see what you think - better polish your shoes though!

Berkshire BMW Maidenhead Like to think that they are a cut above the rest but are actually just your average 2nd hand car dealer. They talk a good service but disappoint on all levels. After my car broke down due to faulty water pump (after 2 days of buying it) the sales guy actually admitted to me that they don't run the full BMW diagnosis utility because it takes too long -Unsurprisingly he didn't mention this before I brought the car. While the pump was being replaced I asked them if they could check the thermostat and alternator, when I picked up the car neither had been done. I didn't bother mentioning as it's just not worth it, they don't listen. Recently took my car into another garage who had to replace the water pump as it was worn!!

I'll never buy from or use Berks BMW again and if you have any sense neither will you.

Also:

Not good. Sell themselves as a BMW specialist but will sell anything to anyone if there's a buck to be made.

After buying my car i discovered that service wasn't performed correctly, so I had to pay to have it done again elsewhere. I also had to have the water pump replaced as the one Berks BMW fitted was worn.

They never managed to change the thermostat which I ended up doing myself. Oh and the exhaust manifold need replacing within 1 month of buying the car. I'd rather walk everywhere than have to buy another car from here.

Also:

NEVER NEVER NEVER Buy from these guys. Lies lies lies. I brought in June 2005 took back 4 times within 1st week and have since had to replace tyres, fuel injectors, Brakes, Boot lock, Central locking!

However good it looks or priced there is nothing they wont say to sell you the car! Like the other comment ended up just taking else where as just doing my head in!

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM BERKSHIRE BMW!

05/08/06: Avoid this place at all costs. Sold me a car riddled with faults. Then it turns out the car was actually a write-off but they were "unaware". They then argued the toss when I demanded my money back. Guy that owns the place very unpleasant to deal with. Probably safer to buy privately than from these cowboys!

Stratstone Taplow Maidenhead, Kent 07/07/06: Part exchanged a z4 to an M3, they said they would pay up the finance on Z4 and I could cancel the direct debit, which I did. Later on bmw finance asked for an extra month of finance. Stratsone hadn't paid it in the settlement.

The refused to pay for their mistake, and I send extra money to bmw finance. All in all, a good con, well done salesman. Advice: don't use them, or check for a con if you do.

BM Wise Bexleyheath, Kent 04/01/07: not the cheapest specialist around im sure, not far off a main dealer i should think. however the service is always excellent, polite and helpful. have been using them for 6 years now and never had cause for any complaint

Also:

25/05/07: May 07, 'R' 318is 1st service away from a main dealer, and i chose very well.. b4 telling them i needed a service they gave me money for the parking meter..nice touch. Full level 2 service, in 1 day, £310, full report, book stamped. Friendly, (Mike & Danny), efficient & deserve repeat business. Fully recommended, don't be put off by the exterior, and u won't miss the cheap coffee at a main dealer.

Also:

21/12/07: Great value full service for my mini. Friendly and trustworthy. Will return.

Also:

17/01/08: Have used them for sevicing and found OK, but put car in for a few repairs and they phone to say the power steering had broke when they they took it out for a test drive. Had to spend £500 was not happy!!!

Bexley Motor Works Bexleyheath, Kent 15/01/08: Great enthusiastic bunch, keep my road car on the road and my race car at the front.
K & M Auto Techniks Maidenhead Excellent non franchise repair shop. less than half the cost of Altwoods but these guys know their job (unlike Altwoods, who have neither knowledge nor yet good manners). Conscientous and careful I recommend them very highly.

Also:

Excellent service by BMW trained mechanics. Having been messed around by Sytner Wycombe these guys replaced the coils in 318is same day and returned the car to my home despite being snowed under with work because it was urgent. Highly recommended.

Also:

18/02/06: Hi, great site, nice to see positive comments from some of our customers. Please could you do us a favour and add a link to our new website on our company name in your listing?

Also:

13/12/05: Once my car reached five years old and no longer under warranty I was worried about the potential repair costs. Bad experiences with the BMW main agents led me to ask for recommendations and a friend sent me to K&M. A bit of a drag driving all the way to Maidenhead from Reading, but I wish I'd found them years sooner! I've been back exclusively to them for over a year now. They're unfailingly up-beat and enthusiastic.

It felt very odd - after dealing with BMW sales organisations for years - to have people telling me "don't sell it - you only have 90,000 on the clock, you've only just run it in... why buy a new one?". And sure enough, the additional £20K I would have had to spend to get a newer one has been much better invested!

K&M is a small outfit, but that's part of the appeal. Telephone and you're talking to someone who knows how your car works, not just whether it would go well with their shoes (meeow!).

Charges are realistic too, significatly less than the 'official' BMW agents. I actually dare admit to people how much a service costs now;-) Highly recommended.

Also:

22/12/06: I found K & M from this website and having previously used Coopers Reading for 10 years, (but felt they were getting expensive), thought I'd give them a go.

The fact I'm taking the time to write this must mean something happened. Yes, everything good that has been reported on this site. They were cheaper, quicker, more polite and diagonalised the four problems my 530D had perfectly.

Not only that, but spotted that the cars performance was really bad (I had gotten used to it) and after replacing a air measuring sensor, driving the car is like owning a new vehicle!

Thanks for the web site it has been a great help.

Also:

14/02/07: My 1st venture into BMW ownership after a company car for 10 years, so was apprehensive on who to trust the car to with my own money for servicing. I needn't have worried as Mick in K&M gave me a quote to the penny and stuck to it. Took advice to change antifreeze & brake fluid at the same time and all for about half the cost of taking it to Coopers just for the inspection 1. After having read some of the comments on 'Plate Glass' BMW dealerships and service receptionists barely old enough to shave it was refreshing to talk to someone who has a true passion in maintaining BMW cars at minimum cost to the customer. Highly recommended.

Also:

27/02/07: These guys are absolutely fantastic! Forget the main dealers who are desperately overpriced! You are a mere cash cow to them.

Dealt with Mick, who did all the work on my car - but also spoke to all of his colleagues who were courteous, polite, knowledgable and informative.

Mick spoke to me in detail each day on priorities to the car and his ultimate concern was not to hurt my pocket (which makes a nice change). I had a series of things done to the car: Service 2, rear axle bushes, front reaction arm bushes to name a few of the jobs. I also handed over a job list which was ticked off and reported back to me after things were completed. All in all it was a pleasant change to the garages I have frequented before - I have owned over 30 cars and this was by far the best garage in terms of standard in all respects. Price wise they beat all competition without compromising anything!

Thanks so much guys, I cannot hold you in high enough regard.

Ps. they were also recommended by 4 other sources before I booked it in - testament to their whole company.

31/03/08:

I just wanted to take a moment and post a note about K&M. I've owned a number of BMW?s ? latterly the E39 530 diesel touring.

And as perhaps many others also have ? I put my trust initially in the franchised dealer network ? in my case Stratstone in Maidenhead. And like many others I quickly became disillusioned by the extremely high labour costs allied to at best very mediocre service competency.

Which is when I started to investigate alternatives and came across the guys at K&M. What a refreshing change.

Real mechanics who've probably forgotten more about BMW?s than most will ever learn. And they?ve got all the diagnostic gear as well.... and they know how to use it too!

Excellent service ? nothing is too much trouble - and very competitive labour charges. They're a real pleasure to deal with ? I?d recommend any BMW owner to give them a try.

I hope you'll find space to add my comments to appropriate page on your web site as K&M are definitely 5 star!!

Altwood Windsor Windsor Absolutely hopeless. Went in with oil leaking from cylinder head - pointed this out to the "technician", and even removed the cowling for them. They called me later and said that the O ring on the dip-stick was leaking. When I pointed out that oil doesn't run uphill, they amended their diagnosis and fixed the problem, replaced the cowling incorrectly and cracked it. The incompetence is unbelievable. To top it off, when I tried to drive into the car-park, some arrogant sales guy was chatting up a female staff member, blocking my entrance. I waited.. waited... eventually I had to get out and ask them to move so I could park, and all I got was a sneer at my 5yr old 525. Stunning.
Sytners Windsor Windsor 15/12/06: Typical Beemer dealership that does not listen to what you tell them and does not trust customers to know what is wrong so the car has to go in twice - the first time to confirm what you already knew was wrong, the second time to do the repair and the third time to get it right. Oh dear, don't bother.
Milars Ruislip West London Purchased new car march 2002.Vehicle returned 7 times to date.Really shabby service-never return calls-accuse customer of negligence.Nonchalant sales staff.Technicians ok.
Vines BMW
and
Crawley, Sussex They fitted new cats to no avail - still had probs, then sevice 1500.00 in all , then realised pipe from airbox to inlet was split causing problem, I got 1000 back! they are useless.

Also:

I had rear subframe bushes and driveshaft seals replaced on a 635. They failed to install them correctly - the rubber bushes were not inserted far enough - so they had to be done again only 1500 miles later after an MOT tester spotted them. The seals failed shortly after too. As a main dealer Vines should have had the tools and expertise to do these straightforward jobs but failed miserably.

In the past, I've bought and had serviced four BMWs (two new & two used) from these shysters but they still treat you like shit anyway. Crap service work, snotty receptionists and patronising salesmen - all of which may explain why I now drive a Mercedes-Benz.

Also:

Bought E36 318iS second hand (same car as in Altwood, Maidenhead review). As a condition of sale they agreed to replace rear window and rear quater-light ruber seals as they were perrished, cracked and turning fluffy. Got the car back afer it was returned for the work to be done. Got the car back and there were a line of dents at the end of the roof above the rear window (caused be leavers or other tools to extract the window) therefore requiring bodywork repair. The frontline staff were pleasant and appologetic about the errors and they did travel to Camberley, Surrey to pick up and return the car. Also had to fight to get the badly fitted (now water damaged) alarm siren module replaced under warrantee as it would often screach as the ingressed water shorted the alarm out.

Also:

18/02/06: Took my E46 for a service last year & they failed to change an indicator bulb, 2 "technicians" and a service advisor couldnt figure out how to do it.

Vines BMW
and
Guildford, Surrey I've always had stunning service from them, their servicing costs aren't cheap, but which BMW dealer is? They also really know how to valet a car. Brilliant service, and they remembered me (salesman *and* service manager) last time I popped in for a favour, even though I hadn't been there for at least two years. I'd give them 6 stars if I could.

Also:

Took my 98 BMW 323i there for an oil service this month (November 04). Very good (polite and proffessional) and they were 40% cheaper than Scotthall in london. BMW dealers aren't cheap but you can take the advice from the service and get a BMW experienced garage to do any major work.

Also:

vines did an insurance repair to door mirror and surrounding areas on my e36 328i coupe. the paint was fundamentaly floored they tried 5 times by then id had enough and got bmw uk bracknell involved.they really are it could be said useless dont get paintwork done by bmw they it could be said dont know how to do it very well, ? very well could read at all the sooner these up themselves bunch of bmw dealers start realising who the customer is then we the customers might get service its a long way off.

Vines BMW
and

and
Redhill, Surrey Have used them since 1997 and have found them very fair. Only hishap was over a battery warranty claim. Apart from that their service and parts dept's are very good. Car always returned clean and tidy and their staff do not seem to care if you drive a 10 year old five or a brand new seven. Can't comment on their sales team as I've never purchased a vehicle from them.

And:

I was worried about expensive servicing costs of my 95 328i, Vines were the cheapest out of all the local dealers and took time to make a full report even during a basic oil service. Spares will always be dear though

And

I took my 1992 convertible to Vines to have a slight adjustment to my hood as it was sticking slightly upon opening. The car came back with a broken arm on the hood and now it doesn't work at all!!! I am disgusted with their service and they won't even take responsibility for the damage they have caused. Don't use them if you care about your car!!

Also:

Took my 318ci here for repairs after someone drove into the passenger door. Quick repair and sorted courtesy car out instead of my insurance company. However at no point did they comment that bodywork repairs are done elsewhere even when they have signs claiming the are a registered bodywork repair garage. When i collected the car it drove but all dash electrics out. They weren't aware of this even though they had DRIVEN it some way back from repair shop. Electrics put down to the repair shop. Wouldn't use again.

Also:

11/04/07: I can not rate Vines high enough, I have used BMW Cooper Croydon in the past, however was not impressed.

The team at Vines are the best I have ever come across. 10/10 well done Vines

Westerly BMW
and
Exeter, Devon Blew a head gasket on a 1.8 E36 and got it fixed for 550 quid. When i got it back it ran like a Sierra, so I took it back and asked if they'd crack-tested the head. They had done a 'visual check'!!!!! Got it tested and it needed skimming, which they charged an extra 60 quid for. Poor.

also

I drove through a flood in my MINI and needed a new engine. Emergency service came and rescued me and westerly were very accomodating. They provided me with a courtesy car at short notice and kept me informed through out the repair. My insurance company paid for the work but the service of the garage was first rate. And the guys were sexy too...

Also:

Recently bought an E36 318i that I was told had full service history at Westerly, went in to enquire as to wether this was the case. Staff very polite, gave me coffee whilst waiting and allowed me to poke around the M3 csl in the showroom. Helpful, polite and respectful, a refreshing change, have had a lot of snooty behaviour from other dealers in the past due to my being 22. Thoroughly recommend the place.

Also:

08/05/06: Very helpful and efficient. Picked up my car from 30 miles away and delivered back. Advised me that not all jobs that I had asked them to do were necessary, which I thourght was honest and impresive. My first experience with BMW dealer. Expensive but excellent service.

Also:

14/12/06: Terrible service, I would not go back unless forced to. The ABS light came on in my 2001 525. They diagnosed a faulty wheel sensor so that was replaced. Charge for the diagnosis test was a lot (can't recall the amount, I do recall doing a double take when I saw it though). Drove out and warning light still on, so went back in and was told that they think the sender unit was faulty. Waited 2 weeks for a new one, and then they charged for another diagnostic test, which I refused to pay. They also offerred a free car wash on both occasions, and both times I was told that they were short staffed, so no car wash (it was after I insisted the second time that it be done.)

They get 1 star for fixing the fault and having a coffee machine!

Also:

09/10/07: Really excellant helpful garage, had many car from them including 530i, 535d, 645i and 335i, they have always collected the cars from 35 miles away and returned them they are helpful, accomadating and pretty reasonable. I've used many dealers over the years but these are the best.

The Paddock Garage Ltd Exeter, Devon 27/07/06: independent BMW specialist just garage opened up near Exeter airport, car was due for it's MOT and some electical faults. They picked it up free of charge, gave me a courtesy car. Mark seems like a nice bloke, ex-BMW senior technician, seems like he knew his stuff as everything was sorted well before i had expected. Sorted out all my problems, and for 1/2 the price of the main BMW dealers. Highly recommend!

Also:

14/12/06: Had 2 repairs done - both a pleasure compared with the local BMW agent (Westerly) First was on my 525 when the climate control stopped working. Car picked up from home and returned that evening clean and fixed (it was a resistor replacement!) Total bill £55. second repair was for an airbag warning light. This time my wife took the car in, they diagnosed and reset the system, no charge. THAT is service. They will be getting my cars in future.

Specialist Cars Shrewsbury Used this garage after seeing this website. 1st class attention and half cost of dealer for service on my e39,so good my brother also uses them now on his e39.

Also:

Service and quality of work is excellent. Very knowledgable about the cars. Very practical too - useful if you have an older BM as he doesn't suggest work unless it's really needed (I thought I needed a new diff but he just changed the bushes instead).

Also:

Have seen this on your website before but have never taken my car there until one morning about two weeks ago. The brake pad warning light suddenly came on and I had to travel across to the other side of the country with my family. They fixed the pads there and then despite having other jobs to do. ALL the staff I came into contact with were very friendly and helpful. I will be using this firm again.

Stevenage 31/10/05: Very helpfull staff in the Parts Dept, the people I spoke to had a good knowledge of the cars and the parts. Very curteous and professional... RING BEFORE HAND to make sure parts Dept' is open before visiting to collect parts.

Also:

18/08/06: found rear springs broken, car went in for service, road tested and definitely A OK, apart from not spotting the broken springs, what a Muppet show. They don't know anything about cars, especially bmw's but top experts at charging zillion £ per hour for labour, also tried the "your brakes need replacing £700" scam, looked at them before it went in, discs were way over min, pads about 60% still to go, total BANDITS! They probably go cattle rustling at weekends too.

Barry Jones independant BMW specialist Stevenage 10/11/05: VERY efficient, put my 328Ci in for inspection 2 (major service)this morning, friendly....nice tidy garage, everything all in...£318, dropped me off and picked me up from the town centre when car was ready!! Car feels nice, highly recommended, definately use again.

Also:

07/07/06: Good small garage. Not the facilities of a big dealer but who needs them if they get the job done and prices are very keen? Always helpful and quick to diagnose and fix problems. Dropped me off at work like the otehr reviewer said. Shame I don't work in Stevenage any more (I don't miss Stevenage, just BJ Autos). Check out the cheeky company logo!

A1 BMW Spares Stevenage 18/03/07: I recently had a service and new tyres and I can not fault this company on politeness, reliability, price and of course good workmanship, and would gladly recommend them.
Godfrey Hall Shrewsbury Main dealer in Shropshire. As with any dealer, a bit pricey, but the work done - Inspection 2 - was excellent and customer service second to none (sent a taxi to collect me when all their drivers were busy!!).
Dick Lovett BMW Bristol 3 weeks notice required to book a service. Indifferent staff (Chat on the phone & ignore customers for up to 15 minutes). Messy service & won't do what is asked. If you want a good BMW dealership, go toWellsway in Bath!

Also a 0 star rating:

These *used* to be good. I now have an 850 and Jeez - what a nightmare. I had a fuel leak so obvious that you could see fuel spurting on the bulkhead. I took it in, told them the fault only to get a so called engineer say he couldn't find the fault. Obviously not an engineer then. I had to argue against the 4 hrs they wanted to charge for *finding the fault* and had the service manager on the phone being rather unhelpful. I cancelled all remaining work despite MY diagnosis being spot on. My Dad knows Dick from his youth. I hope Dicks son is as keen to offer improvements as his Dad is. The most helful guy was the security guard.

Also:

My office is virtually next door to the above but I never use them. When deciding between a used 5 or 7 series they were wholly unhelpful in providing service cost info and extremely snooty. I take my 7 to Ryedale Newport who are very helpful, polite, friendly do an excellent job.

Also:

APPALLING INSPECTION 1, COULDN'T EVEN FIT A POLLEN FILTER CORRECTLY! EVEN AFTER COMPLAINT, THEY PROMISED THE EARTH AND STILL HAVEN'T DELIVERED-THAT WAS 4 WEEKS AGO. WRITTEN TO JIM O'DONNEL ABOUT THEM! I CANNOT RECOMMEND THEM AT ALL.

Also:

Terrible. Can't get through to service line; totally unhelpful staff who really, really don't care. Use Wellsway Bath or Rydale Newport instead.

Also:

5 month old 525dase. Had a load noise from the front o/s wheel. Pulled over but couldn't see anything. Got very loud but then suddenly stopped. Told Dick Lovett above when I took the car in for them to check for damage. When I collected it they said they road tested it but could not hear a noise!!!!. Worse to come. They cleaned the car and put some sort of coating on the tyres which had run over my expensive alloys. I couldn't get it off with wonder wheels, they took it in and got off 95% of it with acid and by polishing the wheels.

And:

I am a proud BMW 328 M sport Owner - year 98, however not proud of Dick lovett - Apparantly you have to ask to get your 4 plus discount! Their excuse for not offering it is " our client base is 0-3 years therefore its not a service that we regularly offer". I recomend Rydale in Cardiff! Excellent customer service.

Also:

Took my 7 series to lovetts for service and their arrogance was beyond belief would never use them again. Made me feel like i was very un important got the impression it was a chore to be even civil to their customers.

Also:

Took car in for service & also said that the temperature gauge intermittently shot up into the red, they found no fault. As it carried on doing it, took it in again, but agin no fault. 3 weeks later I needed a new engine! They said it was due to faulty themostat, but that it was a coincidence that I'd brought it in previously & not their fault! Eventually gave me a 20% discount, but it still cost me £4000.

Also:

Absolutely appauling. Failed to fix oil pressure fault (told them what another garage had identifed, they 'fixed' something else. Detuned the car by 5 MPG at a routine service.

Also:

Another unhappy customer. Failed to notice worn trailing arm bushes during 1500 quid Inspection II (which involved rear suspension work) and then quoted 400 quid to replace them 4 months later when they failed. Took car to Claytons and they fixed it for 175 quid + found rattle in rear suspension which I mentioned to DL when in for its Inspection II + found fuel tank was loose. Avoid unless you like getting ripped off.

Also:

13/07/06: Went in to buy a new 525d M Sport. Arranged a test drive- nice car. My wife subsequently rang and left a message to arrange a test drive of the same care with the sales guy, who then rang me and told me unless I ordered the car first he wouldn't arrange a test drive...so I bought the car from Wellesway in Bath. As to the servicing expensive but satisfactory as its been all routine so far.

Also:

14/11/06: Awful treatment had car for two weeks did nothing and tried to give it back. Also repair they had done previously had not been completed therfore required re-doing for this they wanted to charge me in the region of £3000. A lot of arguing and phonecalls to BMW UK later they decided they would do the work. Less than 12 months on and it needs doing again! They have ruined my car and did i mention they supplied it new!!!! Would give these cowboys a Minus 5 rating if only it were possible. Dont go there!

Also:

18/12/06: Customer Service is arrogant and non existant. You will be made to feel very insignificant when dealing with this dealership.

Took my z3 in for expensive level 2 service after buying the car. failed to see two front tyres were different profiles suggested i needed suspension adjustment costing several hundreds to repair the slight swerve in the car. i took the car to protyre gloucester and they identified the problem immediately.

battery terminals after service were finger tight loose. i discovered this after the car not starting a few times. obviousley the battery check in the service had been ticked.

car was returned with an undiagnosed rattling from the rear. this was after being advised a level ii service would discover all problems. they said they wanted more money to diagnose it but couldn't tell me how much.

minor complaints

service book not stamped correctly

clueless staff unable to properly explain the various service options.

finally wrote to dick lovetts head office in swindon and this was totally ignored.

i am so unhappy with this dealership i am now writing to bmw uk next to try and resolve my issues with them. anyone else who has experienced similiar experiences from this dealership i urge you to put a few minutes aside to write about your experiences.

i see this bmw dealership has more complaints on here than any other in the UK. If you are driving performance BMW machines then AVOID DICK LOVETTS BMW BRISTOL AT ALL COSTS.

Also:

30/05/07: I took my E36 325i here as it had a recal fault on the steering column that had never been fixed. My girlfriend and i were walking towards the car to get an umbrella as the engineer got in.. very disapointed to see him wheelspin it around the car park in second gear!! reported him to the manger who said he would take action, but i wasnt allowed to speak to the engineer myself. Didnt offer anything other than an appology..

Also:

20/10/07: Looked at buying my 530 there, should have known there was going to be a problem when they were £3,000 to 4,000 more expensive than elsewhere so bought from Scothall in Southampton, great deal and sane sales people. Have had it serviced there but for a customer paying for a premium product awfull customer srvice, dont keep to deadline promises, caught adding surprise items to service bill that had to be removed, and arrogant beyhond beleif.

Off now to look at Audis and Lexus as my friends who drive these dont have the same problems.

Also:

08/08/07: Comment from my recent experience from Dick Lovett Bristol. In for insurance repair to minor front bumper damage, car returned with repair incomplete and bumper that had been refitted out of alignment, addition damage to paintwork which appeared to have been caused during bumper removal, car went back for correction and was returned with further marks on paintwork. Would not use again or recommend other than stay clear.

Also:

21/02/08: Absolutely appalling!!! After being charged £202.00 for a few minor cosmetic fixes to my 320Ci, I inspected the car to find that only 1 of the 6 jobs had been done!! And they had the cheek to charge me for the other 5. What makes it even more ridiculous, was that when I questioned the price of the bill, the salesmen quoted "But we have such highly qualified and experienced service technicians and the labour price includes their quality of work"......But they didn't even fix the 5 other jobs.... AVOID THESE BANDITS AT ALL COST!!! - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Clayton Cars Bristol 22/06/07: Went here for basic MOT repair. Were friendly and helpfull. I had a bit of engine noise and they helped track it down to the alternator. Told me not to worry about it as it would be costly to replace.

Also:

28/11/07: I have been using Claytons for over 10 years now with a mixture of BMW ownership. (M5, 740i, 728i and M3). Very re-assuring service, always happy to discuss costs of repairs and service over the phone, have always charged what they say they will. In the work shop all staff are clued up and will show you what needs doing and why. What Lee and Mike don't know about BMW's can be written on the back of a postage stamp. Ok, they don't have coffee and cake like Dick Lovett but they charge you a fair price and get work done quickly. Top dollar will use them for years to come.

Also:

10/01/08: Used Claytoncars twice now. Once for service where they pointed out the car needed new front discs and pads. I also asked them to give my E39 523i a good check over as I had just bought it. Prices seemed fair to me after what dick lovett quoted and they were very friendly and interested. Second visit was when an abs light came on. They checked it out on the spot and said a sensor had failed. Told me not to drive it too much as a stuck sensor can wear the hub out. I also mentioned another strange thing but they told me not to talk about things like that as it gets very expensive!! They did advise me is was not a problem at all.

Bavarian Garage Bristol 20/12/05: BMW Indpendent specialist. Run by a guy called Tom Morton. Nice chap, does all the work himself. Reasonable labour rates.

Also:

29/07/06: Made to feel welcome and that you are not getting ripped off, which is unusual when you are a female BMW driver.

Dick Lovett BMW Swindon, Wiltshire Appauling recommendations after service, once checked out with independant BMW specialist one lot of work not required and other BMW technicians fault. Did not get offered 4+ discount. Staff not too knowledgeable. They think a BMW 535i Sport is over the hill at 5 years old with 50,000 miles on the clock. Will never go back to them. Suggest others take their business to PC Autocare, the Independant BMW Specialist at Lydiard Millicent

Also:

Avoid like the plague. Con artists. Staff unknowledgeable, took 10 hours to diagnose a fault over an 8 day period, then had cheek to charge me over £2000 for a broken high pressure fuel injector

Also:

12/02/08: Avoid this garage at all costs. A full service failed to find leaking radiator even though we told them exact point it was leaking from. Also failed to notice 2 excessively worn shock absorbers.

Dick Lovett tried to blame us as we drove the car away from the garage after a service and therefore accepted their work, doesn't say much for a "BMW service"

The service manager is a rude and arrogant man who thinks the customers need to check the car over themselves "as a BMW service may miss things"

Dick Lovett BMW Hungerford 24/02/06: Took my 323i Auto into DL for a 140,000 mile service. The service cost me £800 but was warmly welcomed and with a decent courtesy car. There were so many faults and issues with the car that I wrote a long list. I was pleasantly suprised to see upon picking the car up, that all points were corrected and the Technicain actually came out to go through all the problems. Again, cost £800 but car has now done 170,000 miles and still take it there for routine service. High costs but recommended.
PC Autocare
and
Lydiard, Swindon 10/02/06: I dropped my car off there for a service along with a problem my car had. I wanted it fixed, the car was juddering but the engine was running fine. When i went to pick the car up he told me i needed a new engine. I was very upset to find out my E36 328 pride and joy with only 45k on the clock was ruined. He quoted me £4000 plus fitting. He still charged me for the service even though he told me i needed a new engine. I later found out from another mechanic that blades were snapped off my cooling fan for the radiator. This caused the car to be shaking. I then bought a fan from Dick Lovett BMW and fitted it myself. This cost me £30 not £5000 and I solved the problem myself!!!!!! I confronted him about it and he still said i needed a new engine. Tosser. How many other people have been ripped off by him?????

I would appreciate any comments. Please email me - mark@needbuild.demon.co.uk

I want to get him shut down, i spent the weekend in a mess thinking i had just lost my £7000 BMW.

04/09/06: I've been using these guys for years never had a problem always been friendly helpfull prices always what they say, they have fixed my e36 320 on many occasions at the drop of a hat only one garage in swindon for me and my bmw try them.

Also:

15/11/06: Have been going to p c autocare for a number of years and have allways found them to be good value for money, and allways willing to go the extra mile for you.

Also:

18/11/06: I have been using PC Autocare for the past 6 years for my BMW 330D Tourer and have been very impressed with the service and competitive pricing (~33% less than main dealership).

I have never had an incident as mentioned by other members on this site, I have always found the PC Autocare team competent and efficient; I would recommend any caring BMW owner to use their service.

Swindon Volvo (what!) Swindon Family run garage, father trained in BMW garage, and has vast knowledge of all that is BMW, loves my E24.
Quarry Motors Sheffield Diagnosed an overheating problem to a faulty thermostat. Very friendly and efficient and kept me on the road. They also replaced a blocked micro filter NOT replaced or checked by Synter in a (pricey) full service 2 months before.

Also:

I've bought parts from them mail order, very good lads.

Jacksons (CI) LTD
and
Channel Islands, Guernsey They took avantage of my Gran for many years doing work?? that was probably inappropriate. Any more detail would probably be dangerous. At least they are easy to avoid on the mainland but I feel sorry for the people on Gurnsey, in fact it is not unheard of for bmw owners to ferry to the uk mainland for servicing, at the cost of 150!!

And

Years ago went in with a friend who wanted to buy a 'new' BMW motorbike. When he came to sell it, my colleague found that it was a year or more older than Jacksons had purported it to be when they sold it to him (I was there) - it had apparently been sitting in their Jersey garage showroom, too.

And:

Took my 1150RS for 2yr service-came out worse than before it went in. Now "bounces" when throttle closed searching for fuel. They agree that there is a fault but admit they don't have the experience to cure it. Have offered no advice on who would. Also had to take it back to have the fairing secured correctly! Very expensive (58.80/hr)-don't want to go back to them but nowhere else will tackle BMW in Guernsey. Pity because have had the bike 2 yrs and loved riding it before service.

Also:

excellent - the whole garage is helpful and cheery - well done!

Also:

Used them a couple of times as we have no other option here. Found them expensive and more than willing to do work that wasn't required. I now ship it to the UK for service and repairs and I'm more than happy to pay the extra (£350 return trip)

AA Service Centre, MITCHUM LONDON, SW Absolutely shocking! Booked in for an Oil service twice - twice they turned round and told em they didn't have time to do anything!!
L & C Banstead M25 (London/Surrey) Good on sales, appalling on post sales service with an arrogant and inflexible approach.

Also a 1 star rating:

If I looked after my customers once they'd bought my products the way L & C do, I'd be out of business!

Wood BMW
and
Salisbury, Wiltshire Sales are appalling unless you are clearly loaded. Servicing (when you can book it in) is average but expensive and frequently will try to replace half the car rather than spend some time fixing a minor issue.

Also:

Took my 325 TDS in to find out the location and possible cause of an oil leak. They was able to give me a report of everything but an oil leak. (Minor problems that I was already aware of) The diagnostic machine even reported door locking faults that were not there before or even after they tested the car??? They jet washed the engine to assatain more about the oil leak causing an electrical problem (fuel injector light permanently on and poor performance). They will happily charge me another £42 plus vat for another diagnosis to tell me what is causing the new problem!!!! UNBELIEVABLE....

Also:

I've bought little bits and bobs and there service and call back was excellent. I had expected the wiper linkage that failed to be much more trouble, but the assistant know E34's and knew exactly what I needed and it was ready and waiting when they said it would be at 5pm that day.

They have sorted out the ASC failure in 1/2 hour and fixed the fault rather than replacing parts at random!

Also:

11/01/06: Had a problem with PDC - they took several days to diagnose and when finaly fixed I found that the wiring had been stripped (probably a pre-existing problem but one they should have found and corrected) the wires were then occassionally shorting out. Unimpressive.

29/01/07: Started using these people after 10 years of disasters with their Bournemouth opperation, I could write a book!! Took my E46 M3 in to have an oxygen sensor replaced, took them 5 days. When I collected it I notice that the previously full fuel tank was showing only 1/3rd full. Called them and said that I was unhappy that someone had put on a lot more miles that just a test run and that I was going to fill the tank and send them the bill. Only mangaged to put in 3 litres but it was still showing less than 1/2 a tank. Took the car back and after 3 hours they said that they had removed the rear seat and changed a transponder? The car stank of petrol and they had put 3 air freshners in the car, one in each door pocket and one hanging from the rear view mirror Three days later I filled up again and came out of the garage shop to find that my car in a pool of 60 litres of 97 octane unleaded. I called Woods and they told me to call BMW breakdown, I said it was their responsibility and that because of their incompetance " they could have bloody killed me" The service manager said that if I continued to use such foul language she would hang up, I asked to speak to the dealer principle and was told that he didn't want to speak to me. I called the Bournemouth office and told them that they had 1 hour to get me a loan car or I was going to sue them, the car turned up 1.1/2 hours later and I left the driver on the fourcourt with my keys and told him to sort it out. Got the car back 8 days later and not even a word of an apology. Have started using Tice of Dorchester who are much smaller and seem to want my business and I have just ordered an E90 M3 from them so I hope they keep it up.

Emtec Salisbury Salisbury, Wiltshire 31/10/06: ExBMW. Do all the work on my E39 530D. Sensible prices, good car care to date and best of all they LISTEN! Thrown numerous niggles at them and though it has sometimes taken two visits they have always managed to resolve the issue. Good knowledge, apologies if due and a flexible approach.

Also:

02/01/07: Put my X5 in for an oil service. Very good price, done when they said it would be. They retro-fitted some xenons promptly and although a couple of minor probs with the lights themselves Emtec listened and were always eager to help. Knowledgeable too and mechanics you can trust. Highly recommended!

also:

01/05/08: Helpful, friendly and flexible. Always done a good job for me and I would recommend them highly.

Wood Bournemouth Bournemouth Poole Dorset 13/05/06: Good helpful sales (aren't they all) Awful awful service department. My 2002 M5 went for oil service with list of faults. Three trips & 15 days to fix them all. Patronising, untruthful and lazy poorly skilled technicians. Only glimmer is an apologetic service administrator (Alex) who does his utmost but hampered by the rest of them. Avoid. Try Barons Hindhead, much better.

Also:

29/07/06: Take it from someone who worked for this bunch of monkeys. What the hell was I thinking when I applied to work for the Wood Group, they are amatures who haven't got a clue how to look after their customers. When I worked at Woods my colleagues could not be bothered to treat any of the customers with any respect, the Aftersales Manager was rubbish at his job and couldn't organise or manager his staff effectively. Everyday was utter chaos and every problem turned into a drama, customers would be going mad and staff would be reading the paper for new jobs. Thank god I got away.

Also:

30/06/07: Absolute crap! Having just mvoed here needed two new rear tyres and brake fluid change - insisted on doing oil change also at extra cost. Not only failed to do it at quoted price, also took over two hours when i was told would be a maximum of 45 minutes. Took the car to some other monkey for the tyres who has put balancing weights on the outside of my alloys - what a total D1CK! Having had the car back for a little while oil light started coming on, taking it to a different garage they had to top up 1 litre of oil, that's nearly 25% of the sump, what had wood done to my car???? Needs inspection now but definately looking for an independent, Wood do not know what they are doing, they are dangerous and they are fraudulent, how can they charge for a full oil change when they didn't use enough oil? Money by deception springs to mind. AVOID AVOID AVOID at all costs, no one should put up with the crap service delivered here.

Star Tech Poole Dorset 15/04/08: Recommended to these guys and started using them 3 years ago on my 2002 320D. Great service at reasonable prices and friendly too. When I drove over a lump of breeze block, they got the parts at cost for me to fit myself and dropped them of at my house. Offered to fit it for me there and then!! They will definitely be doing my new 320D.
Gloucester BMW Specialists
and

and
Gloucester Excellent small outfit - has done several jobs for me including V8 block replacement. Costs reasonable but can be busy.

And

Excellent service and attitude. Performed repairs to wipers exactly as quoted. Phoned me to let me know the car was ready. They even cleaned the carpet afterwards.

And:

I took my 1994 540 to this place as the chap I bought it from said they were OK. They broke off one of the plastic covers from the top of the engine and did not tell me about it. They then completely ignored my phone call and subsequent letter and I had even sent them photos (as I live 40 miles away). I could not believe that after earning a couple of thousand pounds from working on this car they would act this way.

Also:

FANTASIC I CAN'T SAY ANY MORE REAL MECHANICS WHO TELL YOU THE TRUTH AND HAVE TIME FOR YOU ALWAYS.

Also:

Did superb Insp2 on my E46 323i, car runs superbly well, free loan car and full valet and 30% cheaper than Dick Lovett Bristol. They do not try to do unnecessary work like D. Lovett. Also friendly and helpful unlike the arrogant main dealers

Also:

Friendly and helpful. Don't carry out unnecessary work and are honest about the work that does need doing. Can't recommend them highly enough!

Also:

07/08/06: Friendly very efficient and professional reliable service from people with thorough across the board BMW exams from BMW who can pinpoint a problem often in seconds and work with a brilliant sense of deductive inference. Sure they may be be a £ or 2 an hour more than your local garage but they work so fast as they know what they are doing on BMW cars and they do get everything right. Never had a problem and they always order the RIGHT parts and quickly. I wouldn`t take my car, Ben, anywhere else. He wouldn`t let me. In all seriousness. Top quality service from decent people who really know what they are doing and who get it right. A real pleasure and fewer worries knowing they alone look after all my driving needs. Genuine 5 star service. And I have always had fair value for money costs as well. I wouldn`t even think of going anywhere else just incase they made a mistake. These people really know what they are doing with BMW`s.

Also:

09/03/07: I wouldnt take my aged 320i anywhere else. In my opinion they offer excellent value for money servicing and good old fashioned customer service (so rare these days). I drive from London for servcing/ MOT's because they are that much better & cheaper than anything here in the smoke. I've been ripped off at delerships and stitched up at local garages. These boys are trustworthy and knowledgeable. They always do an overall inspection of the car and call to advise on anything pressing or just let you know that something is on the way out if it can wait.

Independent Motor Company
and
Reading David and Steve run the Independent Motor company and offer Servicing and Used BMWs at high prices! Not good workmanship, too fast to get to the bill

If your in the market for a used BMW go in with eyes wide open! Or dont go in.

Also:

V. disappointing. Bought an E36 M3 Evo. Promised a BMW spec INSP II service would be completed. Some time later it's clear several items omitted, I now suspect nothing at all was done, except resetting the service lights. Also turns out "Warranty Holdings" warranty paperwork not filled out properly either. Classic example of 2nd hand dealer cowboys - BEWARE.

Also:

Spoke to both David and Steve. Both helpful blokes. I bought a E36 M3 converable, paid right price for a motor of that age and milage. Had a few minor problems with the car, all sorted with no issue. Still very impressed with service given, will use again.

Keylink Systems nr. Winchester, Hampshire Nigel's been in the business for years. He replaced the engine on my E30 320i back in '86! He has a select team of mature mechanics, not spotty, sullen youths. They always do a top job and are usually far cheaper than main dealers. They're a bit out in the sticks, but very useful to know.
North Oxford Garage
and
Long Hanborough, Oxfordshire In my experience, this is one of the best BMW dealership in Southern England. This is a local branch of Oxford's North Oxford Garage. The North Hanborough branch specialises in caring for older BMWs and has done some good work on my '86 635.

also:

I have received nothing but disappoiting service from any number of SE England BMW dealers. No longer -these guys are the best - courteous, honest and efficient - they aren't the cheapest but they are no rip off merchants and carry out the work in an exempalry manner with after sales service to match.

Also:

These guys actually appear interested in giving good service, and they know their stuff. Cant recommend them highly enough.

Also:

My car was booked in for a 36000 mile service (38564 actual mileage). No reported problem, only advised of tyre depths. The work sheet stated disc and pads checked – 6mm front pads/8mm back pads.

5 days later the brake pad warning light came one (actual mileage 40100), at only 1536 miles since the service. I returned the car back to the garage and both front pads and discs were found to be worn out. Pads now 2mm thick and disc below minimum thickness.

So, in 1536 miles the pads had gone from an inspected size of 6mm to 2mm and the discs were below the minimum limit. I do not believe this is possible in such a short mileage distance and I suspect the inspected sizes to be untrue. As they do not remove the wheels to inspect the pads and discs, I can see they haven't inspected them properly, resulting in this fault.

They've now rectified but in the meantime I've had to lose a day's work and they put my safety at risk. The fitters are pleasant enough but their policies need looking at; the Management and particularly their receptionist need some serious training in customer relations.

Also:

Talk about Snooty! Servicing dept know nothing about cars over 3 years old. Had a huge argument with their service manager about a fault on my old e36 as they couldn't diagnose it but still charged £100 for looking. Took it to a little independent BMW garage problem was diagnosed in 10 minutes and for free! I now drive an M Coupe and they still refuse to even say good morning when I go in.

In my opinion this is one of the worst BMW garages in the South East only visit them if you like being treated like scum and paying massively inflated labour rates for incompetent work

Also:

15/12/06: Used this garage when I lived at Woodstock for service and for crash repairs. Far, far better than the flash new dealership on the A40 at Oxford. Fast, efficent, friendly service. Serious rear end damage [£5K] happened on a Thursday, car repairs authorised next day by North Oxford e-mailing photos and quote to the insurers, and I picked up the repaired car the following Thursday!

Coopers Thames Ditton South London Appeared to provide good service at first, but lied about service book being in safe when we picked up the car, and then posted a created version from a new book. Only admitted it was a copy when challenged. they also kept other related paperwork on vehicle, apparently for their records, which now seems suspect.

Brake fluid service was missed and later done by their Reading branch, who then reset the oil service as well, so have to guess when next service is due. Promised to call back, but of course have never done so. First car bought at a dealer and probably the last.

Also:

Bought a 323ci for A1 condition price and after paying for the car someone had scrapped it on the front bumper. Coopers said they would repair it within a couple of days, it took 3 months. Also I have recently noticed that the seatbelt has rubbed through the leather on the drivers seat, BMW refuse to fix it as it's user error!

Also:

Been for 2 bodywork repairs, both times tried to stuff me by replacing parts which weren't damaged. Hopeless communications, lost my service book for a week.

12/05/06: I took my 2001 735i in for a first service after buying it of a dealer with a BMW FSH. They seemed ok at first. Professional enough front staff. Explained what I needed done and got a nod and all ok. Felt confident my car was in good hands. That is where it stops though. The actual mechanics are unprofessional, unhelpful and rather rude.

I took my car in early for an inspection 2 service. The mechanic called me at 11:45 telling me the lost my key and do I have a spare? What? Apparently they drove the car a 100 meters to the bay, took the key to the service board, a 120 meters but lost it on route? Huh?

I had to leave the car there for an extra day as they did not have spare keys and neither did I. Got the car back and received the standard 10% 4 plus discount but nothing else. Was promised that I can have the £100 key when it is found. Hmm, nothing so far.

On further inspection I do not trust anything they did. I will investigate this weekend to see if the inspection 2 service was done correctly but I am not overconfident as the car was not serviced the day it was booked in for and the key was only activated 13:00 the next day and I got a call at 14:00 asking me weirdo questions in succession about coolant temperature sensors, frayed belts, streaky wiper blades, broken nav computer, dog bones and more asking/telling me if you should be replaced. I was confused and did not want to add to the bill as the garage I bought it from was paying half of the service so I said no. There are little cl
